Prompt#5

There were so many different beliefs, periods, and discoveries throughout the book. The one that I liked and understood the best was the two cultures and the middle ages.  The author talked about Indo- European, Jews,  Greeks, and Romans. He also mentions about the Christianity and how it had formed into what it is now. Gaarder explains that Romans and Greeks  were in the same group of Indo-European culture. Some cultures came together with the same beliefs like Islam and Christianity. It was amazing to read about Christianity when Alberto was explaining to Sophie about how Paul converted to Christianity and did what God told him to do, which was to spread Christianity around in different places.

The period  I disliked was the Renaissance. During the Renaissance, Alberto explains about the scientist and what the scientist had studied and investigated. In my mind, scientist push the investigations too far when they mix God creating humans with humans evolving from some animal. I had never had an interest in studying gravity or Newton’s Laws. Still the topic had been confusing when he would talk about scientist beliefs and studies but then change to how the relationships with God became personal. While I was reading through this part of the book, I found it harder to separate my thoughts and beliefs from the ones Alberto had talked to Sophie about. It became very frustrating for me when I would have to reread pages over and over again. I did make a connection with some science classes I have taken before that talk about Newton’s Laws and have realized that it has never been my best subject and neither has Philosophy.

 I reside down near the skin of the rabbit because of my relaxed attitude. I do not have much interest in every little thing and how it is created like philosophers do. I stay on the down low and do what I am expected to do in life. For me, I am more comfortable to be safe and solid on the surface instead of being out in the open and starring danger in the eyes just like being on the top of fine little rabbit hairs.

The Red Tinted Glasses In Kant Chapter

Prompt#4

In the chapter of Kant Sophie had seen red tinted glasses. These glasses were used to prove to Sophie that no matter how you look at it, everything is the same, just in a different color. The glasses only let Sophie see  a limited understanding of reality. Page 322 “Everything you see is part of the world around you, but how you see it is determined by the glasses you are wearing. So you cannot say the world is red even though you conceive it as being so.” Every other person’s perspective is different because we all come from different backgrounds and different places. People from Thailand are twelve hours away from the United States. They mostly eat with chop sticks and they love to eat really spice foods. Here in America, we eat a lot of sweet tasting food like rich chocolate ice cream and red velvet cheesecake.  When a Thailand citizen comes to America it is very different from their culture and how they do normal every day activities. My grandparents have taken in a girl named Gigi from Thailand and she tells me all kinds of different ways they wash their clothes, eat, and celebrate. Thailand has totally different ways to do things than we do.  The ways these questions connect with problems in my life is by thinking and understand my situations.  Every situation that happens in my life depends on the timing and space that happens with each problem.  We try to understand the problem and figure ways to get around it but in the end we learn from that problem and how to form to it and remember how to handle a situation in that form.   For example, Gigi has only been here for a week and she is already learning from her experiences here in the United States.  I try to remind myself that she is from the other side of the world, it is not that she does not know anything. I have been wearing red glasses for the past week because I can only see that she knows some English and understands a little bit of what I say. When I take the glasses off I see her as a normal human being just like me, living in the same state as I and she is participating in the same activities I do.  It takes a lot of understanding to be able to learn clearly without having obstacles that keep you from seeing what the actual picture is.

The Middle Ages And Christianized

 In the Middle Ages chapter,  St. Augustine definitely kept God  in his mind as the creator of the world out of nothing.   He believed that no man had the right to criticize the Lord.   He also thought that  everyone was at his mercy when it came to God.   St. Augustine thought  that God has two groups, one with saved people and one with the damned.    He had to wait for history to occur to see any change. Since Augustine has come up with this  information Plato is not in much of the Godly information shared by Augustine.    Aquinas had Christianized Aristotle just like St. Augustine had Christianized Plato.    They all had to stop thinking that they would never be considered as a threat to the Christian principles.   With  Aquinas’ thoughts, he tried to compare  Aristotle’s  philosophy  with Christianity.   He had came up with the combination between knowledge  and faith.   He believed that people could easily live with the thoughts of Philosophy and the truths of the bible for Christianity without any problems or confusion.   He thought that you could easily live with many different theological truths ; he had a belief that you could get to heaven by two ways, faith and believing in Christ or  having common sense and reasoning.   Aristotle never really knew about the Christian Revelation so he never became familiar with the bible or even believe in it.   These philosophers became more reasonable when they  put their thoughts together about simple reasoning and Christianity.   They gave everyone and anyone who wanted to learn about philosophy  a chance to separate religious views from a different thought process.    They never really say that Christianity was the cause of one thing and then they made a reason of why Christianity was the cause.   Instead they separate the two different  subjects so there is no way to get either one of these mixed up into one subject.    There is proof that there have been times where God has shown himself through the many different ways of reasoning and  through  Christianity  and the bible.

 

Women Views With Aristotle

P115    “ Aristotle was more inclined to believe that women were incomplete in some way. A woman was an “unfinished man.” “

When I read this part of Aristotle and how his thought process went,  my mind went straight to the past when women were thought of as low standard. Women would not be able to go to school, they would have to stay home and cook and do house chores and sew.  I thought he was very inconsiderate to be a Philosopher and Scientist. Now in the twenty first century, him saying that could probably get him slapped. But in a different perspective coming from the bible it states that woman was made from man’s womb, which is where we get “wom” from womb and “man”.  My all around opinion about Aristotle’s statement about women is a little bit of anger and a bit of thought that he is sort of right about a woman being part of a man. Aristotle and Plato were two thinkers that had mentioned gender and what they thought. Plato mentions  women and about how they are equal to men except they keep the house clean and having children. He was very nice and kind when he thought that women and men could be together and neither one be looked down upon, on the other hand Aristotle was not the nicest about the women subject. He thought that women were uncompleted  and passive unlike a man who is active and productive. Whoever taught him that lied because he is wrong. I do not like Aristotle.It is noticed that most of the authorities in “Sophie’s World”  are mainly men because back in the old centuries women were not really noticed as often. Men back then seemed to have thought of so many different philosophies  and because of their knowledge and understanding.  In my understanding I realized that the men in this book had so many thoughts and questions that it was amazing to keep focused. Every man had some type of different outlook on a subject, but yet they had a similarity. Many of the men had an effect on the next generation of philosophers  throughout history. For example Spinoza was a wonderful philosopher and is known for a promotion of monism meaning God or nature but there is only one main substance in the universe.

The Questions Asked With The Garden Of Eden

There are many questions on how the world was formed, I believe that God has made the world.  The world had been transformed and made through thousands of years with God being the maker.  I cannot explain more about where the world came.  I am Emily Yaeger, and I have a relaxed personality.  I like to be organized and neat when it comes to my work and school work. I am seventeen years old and I like to participate in church activities.  I love the Lord and I have been very thankful for the many people, things, and opportunities he has put into my life.  I am stubborn and opinionated.  I love food and Hershey’s Kisses.  I am a hopeless romantic when it comes to romantic movies.  I am easily frustrated when I do not understand something so when someone does not understand me when I have repeated myself twice.  I am a big procrastinator only when it comes to History essays and English essays.  I try to please everyone, it is a bad habit.  I love to sing and dance when no one is watching.  I love to laugh and have a smile on my face. I try to stand up for people who are being picked on. I am not good at comforting someone when they cry.  I am very bad at algebra  and controlling my stress. I have a hard time expressing myself.  I am really competitive and always try to be on time for everything which does create frustration for me if I am not somewhere at the time I said I would be or when I would turn a paper in. I love to work out and I hate running with a burning passion. My favorite colors are teal blue and black. I torcher my toy poodle by painting her nail, but I do not torcher her just because I feel like it.  I love to watch America’s Funniest Home Videos! I have a passion to help younger children  with school and family problems. I still have not decided what I want to be when I graduate. I like to keep the inside of my car as clean as possible. I like to read teen romantic, drama books ,but I cannot stand philosophy books, or history books. They make me fall asleep and I have to constantly reread pages over and over till I remember the knowledge or understand it. I get extremely grumpy if I do not get enough sleep, my family and friend know that very well about me.
